Animated captions

Motion with a reason—not every word bouncing for attention.

The best animated caption gives the eye a place to land at the exact moment the voice arrives. Moonshot times the motion to speech, reserves stronger treatment for meaningful words and keeps the sentence readable underneath it.

Workflow

From spoken clip to post-ready video

  1. 01

    Start with the voice

Timing is derived from the spoken audio, not guessed from equal-length text blocks.

  2. 02

    Pick the motion grammar

Choose colour flips, boxes, glows, squash, wipes or restrained editorial movement.

  3. 03

    Protect readability

Preview the line at phone size and keep the movement subordinate to the sentence.

  4. 04

    Review the rhythm

Watch once muted and once with sound before export.

Template proof

See the difference on actual footage

These are rendered Moonshot templates, not static mockups. Compare how each system groups words, signals emphasis and makes room for the speaker.

Three kinds of caption motion

Reveal motion answers a timing question: which word is being spoken now? Emphasis motion answers a meaning question: which word matters most? Transition motion answers a scene question: how does one caption group make room for the next? Mixing all three at full intensity creates noise.

A clean social template may only flip the active word from white to yellow. A playful template can stretch or curve a hero word. A behind-the-person template uses the speaker's silhouette as the transition. The right choice depends on delivery speed and footage, not on which effect is newest.

Animation cannot rescue dense writing

If six weak words arrive before the point, animating them creates six moving weak words. Cut the runway first. Shorten caption groups, move the claim to frame one and let motion reinforce a sentence that already earns attention.

For fast speech, reduce motion distance and keep more of the line visible. For slower, emphatic speech, one large word can carry the beat. Caption animation is pacing made visible.

  • Use colour change for speed and clarity
  • Use scale sparingly for one or two hero words
  • Avoid large vertical travel near faces or interface controls
  • Respect reduced-motion preferences in previews and marketing UI

Why word-level timing matters

Sentence-level timestamps can look acceptable for static subtitles and fail immediately when a highlight is supposed to follow the voice. The active word drifts, the viewer notices, and the animation starts competing with comprehension.

Moonshot stores timing at the word level. Correcting the transcript does not force you to rebuild the animation track, which is the practical difference between an effect you use every week and one you abandon after a demo.

Questions people ask before exporting

Do animated captions improve retention?

Motion can make the current word easier to follow, but there is no universal uplift. A strong opening and readable timing matter more than adding a complex animation to every word.

What is the difference between animated and dynamic captions?

Animated captions use motion or colour over time. Dynamic captions usually also change grouping, placement or treatment in response to the words. In everyday search, people often use the terms interchangeably.

Does Moonshot edit the transcript or a timeline?

The transcript is the primary editor. Correct a word or remove a sentence and the caption timing follows; you can still adjust visual placement when the footage needs it.

Can I try Moonshot before paying?

Yes. The free plan lets you upload, transcribe, style and preview one video up to two minutes without a card. Downloading the finished MP4 starts on Creator.

What does Moonshot export?

Moonshot exports H.264 MP4, with vertical 1080×1920 as the default and square or landscape formats available. Higher quality tiers are available where the plan and source support them.
