Burned-in captions and Instagram's caption sticker are different
Instagram's native caption sticker is quick and editable inside the app, but its styling and grouping are limited. Burned-in captions give you predictable typography, motion and placement across every repost. For accessibility, you can still enable the platform's selectable caption track as well.
Use the native option when speed is the only requirement. Use a video caption generator when the text is part of the visual identity or when the same file must travel to TikTok and Shorts unchanged.
The first caption is part of the hook
Do not wait for the first complete sentence before showing useful text. The viewer is already deciding. Put the claim, tension or concrete object on screen at frame one, then let the spoken line catch up.
A good first caption is short enough to scan while the visual establishes itself. If the clip opens with a logo, greeting and scene-setting sentence, no caption style can refund those seconds.
Design for the interface, then for the aesthetic
Keep essential text away from the bottom description stack and the right action column. Move captions when they collide with a face; safe-zone advice is a boundary, not a command to cover the speaker's mouth.

What size should an Instagram Reel be?
A full-screen Reel is 9:16; 1080×1920 is the common working size. Instagram accepts a wider aspect-ratio range, but vertical fills the Reels viewer.
Should Reels captions be in the centre?
The central band is the safest default, but avoid placing text over a face. Keep essential words clear of the lower interface stack and right-side buttons.
Does Moonshot edit the transcript or a timeline?
The transcript is the primary editor. Correct a word or remove a sentence and the caption timing follows; you can still adjust visual placement when the footage needs it.
